Provincial Rates

Sales tax rates by province and territory

Canada does not use one flat national sales tax in practice. The rate you charge depends on the province or territory, which is why GST, HST, PST, and QST can produce different totals for the same subtotal.

Tax Types

HST vs GST vs PST vs QST

Some provinces combine everything into HST, while others stack GST with PST or QST. Province-based tax labels help the result feel local and make it easier to carry the right rate into an invoice.

HST

Harmonized Sales Tax combines federal and provincial tax into one rate, as used in Ontario and several Atlantic provinces.

GST

Goods and Services Tax is the federal sales tax and stands alone in provinces and territories such as Alberta, Yukon, and Nunavut.

PST

Provincial Sales Tax is added on top of GST in provinces like British Columbia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan.

QST

Quebec Sales Tax is used alongside GST in Quebec, which is why Quebec totals differ from other provinces with similar-looking workflows.

Invoice Math

How to add HST to an invoice

Start with your subtotal before tax, multiply it by the provincial combined rate, then add that tax amount to the subtotal. If you are invoicing a Canadian client, the province or territory determines which tax label and rate you should use.

Included Tax

How to calculate tax from a total

If the number you have already includes tax, divide the total by one plus the tax rate. That gives you the pre-tax amount, and the difference between the total and that subtotal is the included tax.

Sales Tax FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Canada sales tax

How do I calculate HST on an invoice?

Take your subtotal before tax and multiply it by the HST rate for the province. Then add that tax amount to the subtotal to get the final total.

How do I remove tax from a total in Canada?

Use the tax-included total and divide it by one plus the applicable sales tax rate. The result is the pre-tax amount, and the remainder is the tax portion.

Why does Quebec use a different rate?

Quebec combines GST with QST, so the total rate differs from provinces that use HST or GST plus PST. That is why province selection matters.
